EMPD officer fails to act

Gary Austin writes:

On June 7, at 6.05pm, I was driving down Pretoria Road; it was dark.

I nearly crashed into the back of a TLB tractor – which was driving towards town – because it had no lights or chevrons. I knew, that at almost any time of the day and night, one would probably find SAPS or traffic officers at the nearby Northmead KFC so I drove straight there. Indeed, I spotted a Benoni traffic officer waiting outside for his takeaway order.

It was perfect timing. As the TLB drove straight past us, he was able to see for himself what the problem was.

Presumably fearing that he would have had to forfeit his KFC order if he intervened, his immediate answer was…wait for it… that he could not do anything because the traffic department did not have a low-bed truck to pull the TLB off the road and so, unfortunately, he would have to let it drive off.

In response to my question as to why he could not get it off the road by having it pull onto the pavement, or into a side road, he insisted repeatedly that he could not, and would not do anything without a low-bed truck.

Chicken…wouldn’t you say? Metropolitan police, please assure us that we are not paying this man a salary, and please advise what steps will be taken in this regard.

Editor’s note:

The letter was sent to the EMPD and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality for comment on June 14, but no comment had been received at the time of going to print.
