Resident disputes municipality’s claim

Alta Botes writes:

A few weeks ago there was an article in the Benoni City Times where the municipality said the water meters in Benoni are too young to replace and they were replaced not more than 20 years ago.

I would like the municipality to explain the following to me:

New Modder is a suburb of Benoni.

I’ve been staying on this property for more than 35 years.

I am the only one in Selby Avenue who still has an old meter with a plastic lid on it.

The grass grows over it, vehicles park on the pavement on it and it breaks.

When will they replace this water meter?

Secondly, I would like to know when the residential area upgraded to a business area.

The roads in New Modder are not suitable for big trucks to drive on.

Who is responsible to fix the roads?

There is a trucking businesses with big trucks which speed up and down the roads from dawn to dusk.

Editor’s note:

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe responds:

The reported water meter is about 20 years old.

This meter will be replaced during the 2017/18 financial year which starts in July.

Water meters lose accuracy as they age and subject to the consumption pattern.

Meters with higher consumption volumes will be replaced earlier than meters with low volumes.

Residents experiencing problems with their water meters may report them through the municipal call centre on 086 054 3000 or visit their nearest customer care centre for assistance.
