Memories fly back

Cornelis Norel, of Rynfield, writes:

The Benoni City Times of February 3 contains an article entitled “Benonian moves piece of history”, by Kevin van der List.

READ: Relocation of ancient Viking was no ‘plane’ sailing

This relates to the Vickers Viking Aircraft that was operated by Protea Airways and how it was recently moved from O R Tambo to Rand Airport.

In June 1960 – as a school boy of 11 years of age – I was privileged to travel to Amsterdam in the Netherlands with my mother and younger brother on this very same aircraft, on a charter flight operated by Trek Airways.

This was an experience of a lifetime.

The entire trip lasted four days, and we slept over in Entebbe in Uganda, and then in Luxor in Egypt, followed by the last night’s stay in Nice on the French Riviera.

The trip back was of a similar nature, but we stayed over at different points.

Thanks again for a great local newspaper.
