Help locate historical piece

Glynis Cox Millett-Clay writes:

I have been asked by Sir George Farrar’s great-granddaughter, Claire Crookenden, if anyone in Benoni knows the whereabouts of the head or “bust” of Sir Farrar that used to be in the adult section of the Benoni Library.

Send your letters to bctletters@caxton.co.za

Claire remembers her grandmother, Helen Turner, and uncle George Turner coming from White River to unveil the “bust” in the mid-1970s.

Elmien Mudge, who has been with the Benoni Library for about 37 years, remembers the occasion.

I would like to know if anyone has the City Times article documenting this occasion and if there is a photo of the bust.

Also, can anyone tell us where this bust is today as I have made enquiries with the library and the museum and no one knows where it is?

Claire would love to see this bust, and when found, donate it to St Andrew’s School for Girls in Bedfordview.

This is where Sir George Farrar and his family lived in the early 1900s; it was called Bedford Farm in those days.

Any information would be appreciated.

Editor’s note:

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality spokesperson Themba Gadebe replies:

“The Benoni Library personnel searched for the bust at the facility but it could not be traced.”
