Building a movement

Alderman Allan Sauls writes:

I could not help reading the letter by Peter Bachtis “Sign BCC petition”, recently published in City Times, that communities are becoming more aware about issues affecting their communities, while wanting to give the matter serious and immediate attention.

Citizen participation is a process allowing citizens with community issues the opportunity to raise these matters at legislature level on a local, provincial or national government level.

Such citizen participation is done in person, by members of an affected community presenting their proposal regarding the issue the community needs addressing, as in the case of Benoni Country Club remaining a community asset to the benefit of the community.

Communities are owners of community assets.

Community assets like the BCC had been acquired and maintained with public funds.

These funds had been paid into the coffers of the then Benoni City Council and currently into the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

Surely citizens have the right on how these assets are managed and used, and by whom?

With this in mind, communities may approach the legislative oversight committee responsible for the possible sale of the BCC asset, with a view to ensure the BCC asset remains a public-owned asset managed by the EMM on behalf of the community of Ekurhuleni.

As a member of the public, I’m building the Citizen Participation Movement that aims to assist communities and citizens in making their voices heard in the corridors of local, provincial and national legislatures.
