Shop around or feel the pinch

In particular the prices charged by some retailers for mutton and potatoes.

There is currently a glut of mutton on the market since December, brought about by high feed prices and drought.

There is also a decline in the consumption of this product after Christmas, which is normal but has added to the supply situation.

From what has been published in the media the price of mutton has fallen by around 30 per cent over the past few months but consumers are not benefiting from this.

Some butchers in Actonville are still selling mutton for R120/kg.

Some places outside our area sell for R60/kg.

Of course there are different grades; however the situation seems ridiculous and we appear to be exploited.

The same with potatoes.

Some retailers sell fresh potatoes for over R100 a bag and elsewhere one can get them for around R60 a bag.

The bottom line is that you need to shop around.

Blind loyalty will make holes in your pockets.
