Thanks to the City Times

Over the years I have had a couple of spells as chairman and been president for over 20 years.

This qualifies me to comment on the immense contribution of the Benoni City Times to the development of sport in our town.

One goes back to the days of the late Rob McBride, then Mark Beer, Clinton van der Berg and Kevin McCallum.

All of them have gone on to make their mark in sports journalism, Mark Beer as sports editor of the Saturday Star, Clinton at the Sunday Times and, today, communications manager for SuperSport, while Kevin McCallum is chief sports writer for Independent Newspapers.

All cut their teeth at the City Times and in Benoni, reporting on sport.

Logan Green has followed in their tradition and does a superb job in covering sport in the city.

He understands the ethos of sport and is passionate about it.

His contribution to the development of sport in our town, as well as at Benoni Northerns through coverage of sporting events and achievements in the City Times is significant.

When Benoni Northerns was officially founded in 1972 the Benoni City Times was there to record the events.

Various articles about the club from the City Times, from its inception to date, adorn the walls of the club.

Congratulations on your new format.

It is colourful and covers a more diverse range of topics than before.

It is also more reader-friendly and I like the #knowyourbenoni column.

There are just so many people who contribute so much that we don’t know about, those who make a difference.

I also agree with Glynis Millett-Clay that an article on the history of Benoni would be nice.

Thank you Benoni City Times for the partnership with Benoni Northerns over the years; both have much to be proud of.

This is a partnership which I know will continue to grow; both share the same values, and that is to serve the community of which we are part.

Wishing you Kevin, and your team, all the success you deserve.
