Branch into different direction

Paul Elliott, of Northmead, writes by email:

Some 10 years ago, a tree outside my house dropped a branch onto my fence, causing damage.

I claimed compensation from the council, which was paid.

A month ago, the same tree dropped a branch and completely blocked 14th Avenue for a while until two (private) individuals dragged it clear.

On Saturday, the same tree dropped another branch which damaged my fence.

It is only a matter of time before we have the first fatality.

If the municipality has no intentions of maintaining these trees, they had better hand this job over to the householders; we already cut the grass outside our houses.

Let us all now claim the grass verges outside our houses by the law of squatter rights.

We could leave a one metre strip for pedestrians and the rest would be our property.

We could keep the trees in good order while a by-law could be passed to make it a very serious offence to kill any tree.

Will someone have to die before sanity prevails?

The municipality can opt out of maintaining trees but they cannot opt out of the consequences of not maintaining trees.
