The new face

The Benoni City Times has a new skipper at its helm.

After 21 years as editor of the paper, Hilary Green’s tenure came to an end on September 30.

I, Kevin van der List, took over as editor on October 1.

To say I have big shoes to fill would be an understatement, but I think I am wearing the right ones.

I was born in Bloemfontein on May 23, 1991.

I started school at Grey College, Bloemfontein.

At the age of 10, I moved to Benoni where I attended Farrarmere Primary School.

I graduated from the school in 2004 and enrolled at Benoni High School.

I matriculated in 2009, and, in 2012, attained my degree: BA Languages: Journalism, from the University of Pretoria.

Having lived in Benoni for over 10 years, the Benoni City Times was an obvious platform from which I could launch my career.

So, at the end of 2012, I started working at my local newspaper.

It is an absolute honour to have been promoted to the position of editor.

I am a proud Benonian and am extremely passionate about the old mining town; at times defending and promoting it late into the night around a fire.

It goes without saying that the Benoni City Times newspaper, as well as its online platform (www.benonicitytimes.co.za), has crawled deep into my heart.

This passion and constant desire to improve YOUR Benoni City Times will be my motivation and mission.

I will promote myself as the face of the publication and will personally attend as many events and functions within the community as possible.

My goal is to inform, educate and entertain you on everything Benoni related and remind you that we care and would like to help where we are able to do so.

Making you realise that we are there to serve you is all important.

I encourage you, the reader, to continually give us feedback of news leads and when we get it right – and wrong.

The newspaper will also undergo minor tweaks in the coming months to enhance your reading experience.

It is not going to be an easy road, but together we can take Benoni to greater heights.
