Benoni SPCA has my utmost respect

Rory McColgan writes by email:

Volunteer work is something not on everyone’s to do list, but it is something that is truly needed.

I have been a volunteer at the SPCA in Benoni for nearly a month now.

I volunteered because of my love for animals and because I had some spare time on my hands, but this is just me.

For those who don’t want to volunteer because they have mixed thoughts when it comes to the SPCA, thinking that they are heartless and do not care for the animals.

This is simply not true. During the time I spent at there, I have seen how dedicated and caring the workers are towards the animals.

They show love to the homeless animals, compassion to the sick animals and courage for the dying animals.

Donald, the caretaker of the sick and abandon dogs, loves these dogs like I have never seen anyone do before.

He talks to them, calms them, walks them and puts jerseys on them so they won’t get cold.

He is an amazing man with a big heart.

The SPCA does excellent work to maintain a comfortable and clean environment for the animals.

I worked in the cat boarding and adoption area, which is managed by Ben.

Every morning we would clean out the cat area.

The food and water bowls are washed and refilled and the kitty litter boxes are replaced with new litter every morning.

Each cat pen has its own blankets to keep the animals warm and toys to keep them busy.

I had the opportunity to work with the people in the office, as well.

Jessica is a hard worker and she is very friendly.

Adele, the manager, is another person with whom I became acquainted; she both stern and caring and runs the SPCA like it is her home.

Aden has been a volunteer for more than a year now, even though he is still at school.

He works just as hard as the rest.

The Benoni SPCA and the staff have my absolute respect and I will cherish these few weeks that I have spent with them.
