Marathon markets Benoni to thousands

Gary Austin writes by email:

The letter “Is all the noise really necessary” refers.

Residents complain that Benoni is not the “jewel that it used to be”.

Residents complain that no one invests in Benoni.

The perceived narrow-mindedness of Benoni is constantly the subject of jokes.

How do we shed these negative perceptions and inject capital into our town?

By hosting events where we attract 7 000 entrants from all over Gauteng (and the rest of RSA) – so that people can see for themselves what a jewel Benoni really is!

Yes, as residents, we are all inconvenienced at some time.

We tolerate the noise of school bands practising at all hours.

We tolerate loudspeakers at carnivals and sports events.

The Slow Mag marathon is probably the only event which goes past the complainant’s house in the year.

The date of the race is well advertised in advance, and the “noise” lasts only a few hours. Over the years I have noticed how residents (who have nothing to do with the organisation of the race) get excited and join in the festivities alongside the road – despite the inconvenience to them.

Come on Mr Graupner, is it really that much to ask of you to assist in the marketing of our town for a few hours one morning a year?
