‘Unhappy with SPCA’s assistance’

Animal lover writes by email:

I read, with interest, about the lady who wrote in about Benoni SPCA not assisting with medication for her animals (Friday, January 23).

I too have had bad experiences with Benoni SPCA.

In 2014 I called them four times, with my concern about a dog which is barking in distress and howling constantly.

I have given them the address in Brentwood Park.

The first time I called in October, a gentleman answered the phone and said he would get someone to call me back.

No one did.

I then called back, and again he said someone would call me back; nothing.

I called again in December, and a young lady answered the phone and said the manager, Ronel (I think her name is) has been in an accident, but they will look into the matter and call me back.

But still nothing.

I then called the Boksburg SPCA and they said they could not help as it did not fall in their area.

To this day, the Benoni SPCA has done nothing.

The neighbour’s dog is still barking in distress, howling constantly, sometimes till 3am and 4am in the morning.

The dog’s voice gets hoarse from so much barking and howling that I get so upset, and the Benoni SPCA are doing nothing about it.

I read with interest about them constantly wanting money, yet they do not seem to care about animals.

Please can someone help this dog?

Editor’s note:

Chairwoman of the Benoni SPCA Marcelle Meredith said management is unable to explain why the call was not recorded and actioned sooner.

“We can however, advise that the moment we received your mail, an inspector was dispatched.

“We are pleased to say that the animals in question are in good condition.

“As most owners, these people work and the dogs bark, probably out of shear boredom.”

Meredith said in future, if the public have no joy from the staff, they should insist on speaking to the manager Adele Makings.

The writer confirmed that the dog’s barking has stopped.
