Cancer awareness highlighted on World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day is held on February 4 each year and aims to create awareness and early detection of the disease.

Life The Glynnwood Hospital released some of the myths about the disease:

  • It’s impossible to prevent cancer.
  • Skin cancer only affects white skins.
  • Cancer is a death sentence.
  • Young women don’t get breast cancer.
  • Young men don’t get testicular cancer.
  • Cellphones can’t cause cancer.
  • If you’ve smoked heavily for years, the damage is done.
  • Smoking just two cigarettes a day, chewing tobacco or snuff is safe.
  • Eating meat is essential for your health.
  • If you take antioxidants supplements, you needn’t eat five portions of fruit and vegetables.
  •  Alternative treatment and a positive attitude are all you need to beat cancer.

One in six men and one in seven women in South Africa will get cancer in their lives.
Members of the community are reminded to have their annual mammogram/pap smear.
