Staring at a blank page

Logan Green, sports Journalist writes:

Here I am again.

Staring at a blank page.

It’s weird you know?

A blank page.

Be it in paper or digital form.

As I sit here staring into this white unfilled space not too many thoughts flood my mind.

Strange that…

Usually I can’t wait to jot down my next big idea.

What do I write down?

What profound and witty things do I put into black and white text that will instantly grab your attention?

Oh, look!

I am writing something now.

Ah, now the brain juices are flowing…

As a writer the ideas that I have, for example, thought of in the shower, on the John or in bed at some ungodly hour of the morning are often the greatest thing since BBQ Fritos but when that blank page is fixed in front of me a million other new, completely different and (sometimes) interesting concepts bombard and occupy my brain.

It’s a vicious and often frustrating cycle for any scribe.

The abundance of thoughts force you (the writer) to go off on a random tangent and completely forget about the original theme of the whole piece.

The fact of the matter, though, is that a blank page represents a fresh start and a canvas for the literary artist to create a written masterpiece.

Once you get going you cannot stop.

You may scratch out or delete words a million times but at least you are on the pathway to formulating something fresh and unique.

If you are a prospective writer and have a good idea, run with it.

Open up a fresh notepad or a new document on your PC and just get to it.

Great ideas wait for nobody.

The American author Jodi Picoult summed it up perfectly when she said: “You might not write well every day, but you can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page.”

So, the next time you are staring at a blank page doodle a bit and roll with the random thoughts that come to mind.

Who knows your best piece could flourish from the cleanest, whitest space?

It all starts by staring at a blank page.
