What has happened to beautiful Benoni, once known as the Sandton of the east?
I was born in Benoni and have lived here for 60 years, and can remember people coming from the northern suburbs for a family picnic on the weekends, around one of our many beautiful dams.
The only “user friendly” dam left, where you can still take children safely is Homestead Dam, but sadly this dam now has raw sewage gushing into it from the sewer pipe that runs along Mercury Street, from Farrarmere.
Just last weekend there were children paddling in these waters and often fishermen do as well, totally unaware of the potential health risk to themselves.
No one at the local council answers the phone and the health department says it is not their responsibility.
Very sad times indeed.
