R5.70 levy a total disgrace

Sue Lamb writes by email: I read your newspaper article last month, regarding the illegal charge of R5.70 on our rates and taxes for “Refuse: Area Cleansing Levy”.

Funny thing is, when I went into the Benoni Municipality today, to request they take the charge off and pass a credit for previous bills, I was advised that they could not.

I was told I would have to go to the Waste Department and request them to issue an instruction to that effect!

I felt sorry for the official I was dealing with, as his hands are obviously tied – but I am also NOT going to waste my fuel to drive out to the waste department.

So – it is clear that the mayor was simply “making the right noise” but has not done anything about it.

Surely a responsible, alert department head would have issued the instruction very quickly – to have the charge dropped and credits passed?

Or is this another scam to take money and hope we will not bother to resist, or that some won’t even notice?

I would also like to point out that they don’t clean the area – and there have been times when I have seen a trail of bits and pieces of litter left around after the refuse collection van has left.

I have taken this illegal amount off – so I now get a bill with the new charge of R5.70 for the month and an outstanding amount for the previous charges of R5.70 which I have taken off!

I think it’s a disgrace!
