Proud to be a South African?

Laura Dewar writes by email:

Dear Benoni Readers,

Often I have wanted to put pen to paper regarding certain day to day issues, but a recent viewing of Top Gear has finally forced me into airing my viewpoint.

This programme, viewed by, on average, a quarter of the world’s population, has just broadcast an episode where a not-so-well-known British actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, related his experience of being hijacked in KwaZulu-Natal.

Great… I am sure thousands of Brits have just dashed out to plan a trip to our most beautiful of countries!! Not.

What is going on? We are now at the stage where every day, each of us, young, old, rich, poor, famous or not so famous are being affected by the crime in our country.

It’s affecting us socially, financially and morally.

At what stage do we stand up and say enough is enough; when do we take this country back from the criminally in charge?

When do we say: what can I do?

From not throwing litter out of our car windows to educating our children in the differences between right and wrong, each of us can make a difference.

If we start treating each other with a modicum of respect, whether driving in our cars or walking down the street, maybe we can start a trend.

Let’s hashtag #making this country a better place for us to live#?

Anyone willing to support this ideology?
