Let’s make it clean and green

Please folks, let us each and everyone make Western Extension a suburb to be proud of.

Marilyn Drummond, Ward 28, Council Committee, writes by email:

The letter from “Confused” has prompted me to write one of my own, stating the council by-laws concerning refuse removal.

No refuse is allowed to be set on the sidewalks until pick-up days; this includes garden refuse.

Any persons failing to comply are liable for a fine of up to R2 000.

I have been endeavouring to educate the residents of our lovely suburb by distributing refuse removal calendars and memos regarding this, but it has been to NO avail.

Today, Sunday, April 7, I had reason to drive along Kemston Avenue, above Harrison Street, and was appalled to see what I can only describe as a garbage dump.

I had to ask myself: do these people have no pride, either in themselves, their homes or their suburb?

If each resident kept their own front door, or in this case, their sidewalk free of garbage, the problem would be solved.

I am, therefore, appealing to residents: please, please, no garbage on the sidewalk.

I am also informing them that failure to comply will result in a fine.

Please note, also, that refuse collectors will only remove what is placed in bags, not old carpets, building rubble, etc.

Please folks, let us each and everyone make Western Extension a suburb to be proud of.

Many thanks, in anticipation of a clean, green suburb.
