Department of Education ready for NSC 2022 exams

The number of full-time enrolments in Gauteng has increased from 132 869 in 2021 to 138 877 in 2022

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane recently held the 2022 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination pledge signing ceremony at BB Mnyathaza Secondary School in Etwatwa, ahead of the commencement of the NSC exams on October 31.

The signing of the pledge serves as an indication of the learners’ commitment to the NSC Examination Code of Conduct that they will be honest, not cheat or use prohibited material in exam rooms and will not compromise the integrity of the exams.

Chiloane said 138 877 full-time learners will sit for the exams in Gauteng compared to last year’s 132 869.

“The department has trained and officially appointed chief invigilators for all 1 018 examination centres to administer the 2022 NSC examinations. We have appointed service providers to augment security in districts such as armed escorts, response units and CCTV cameras.”

Load-shedding interventions
Chiloane said Eskom and City Power have been informed of the important dates on which CAT and IT practical examinations are being written to minimise the power cuts on those dates.

“An audit of CAT and IT laboratories has been conducted.

“Examination centres that do not have generators will procure or rent generators to avoid the disruption that may result from a power cut. The department has also leased generators to ensure that backup power is available for key processes such as marking and capturing proceed during load-shedding,” said Chiloane.

The ministerial release of national NSC 2022 results and the provincial release of results will be on January 19 and January 20.

Update on Grade One and Eight learner placements
According to Chiloane, from October 3 SMSs with placement offers have been issued to parents and guardians of applicants who meet placement requirements in terms of the options.

“To date more than 159 070 (47.8%) unique applicants have been placed. A total of 87 608 Grade One’s and 71 462 Grade Eight’s have been placed. A total of 173 487 (52.2%) unique applicants are unplaced,” said Chiloane.

Chiloane said placement offers will continue being sent out daily until November 30.

“We have observed through the media and our communication platforms that parents who did not receive offers are anxious and panicking. We urged them to be patient as all learners will be placed,” said Chiloane.
