ERWAT warns Daveyton residents against using effluent water

ERWAT says the water is not safe for use.

Extended planned maintenance work done by Rand Water has led to the taps in Daveyton and Etwatwa running dry, leaving thousands of households without access to clean running water.

According to Wanda Annandale, ERWAT manager of communications, marketing and stakeholder engagement, desperate residents have resorted to collecting effluent from ERWAT’s Daveyton water care works for domestic use.

“We have engaged with employees and security personnel stationed at the facility to discourage collection of this water but the situation has gone beyond our control,” she said.

Annandale explained that the area where effluent is being collected is located outside the facility’s fenced operations, making collection by residents difficult to monitor.

“We cannot stress this enough – the water is not safe for consumption or domestic use,” she said. “Use thereof could result in illness.”
