Child Welfare revamped shop opens

The charity shop sells quality second-hand goods at discounted prices.

Greater Benoni Child Welfare (GBCW) reopened its bigger and better charity shop on October 7.

It was a buzzing day at their premises in Third Street, Northmead, as hundreds of bargain hunters arrived to shop at the charity thrift shop.

The reopening of the shop boasted a variety of activities for the whole family, including jumping slides.

The shop, which dates back to the 1980s, moved from its old space to a spacious room that used to be a playroom.

According to Vanessa Carelse, the director of the GBCW, they converted the old charity shop into a media centre for the children of Colin House.

“We revamped the charity shop to increase sales and income. We have received support from professional shop fitters from Flemingo, who did the layout of the shop, cabinets fittings, repainting and all the signage.

“The support we received from the public has been amazing. We had more people visiting our shop.”

Carelse said they depend on the charity shop income as it assists with running Colin House and the society’s statutory work.

The shop’s loyal customers could not stop praising staff members for the exceptional work put into revamping the shop.

A regular shopper, Wendy Minnie, said the new shop is beautiful and more organised.

“For the past five years, I’ have been buying clothing and teddy bears for my children here,” said Minnie.
Another regular shopper, Sophie Masupha of Wattville, said she used to come with her late mother when she was young.

“The shop is dear to my heart because of its memories and reasonable prices. Now that I have a family of my own, I also come with them to make use of the great deals and fashionable goods,” said Masupa.

Regular shoppers Sophie Masupha of Wattville and Thembi Masinga of Daveyton attended the reopening of Benoni Child Welfare’s charity shop on October 7.

Carelse said hot-selling items at the shop include clothing and toys.

The charity shop operates Mondays to Fridays from 09:00 to 16:00 and every first week of the month on Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00.
