FOLLOW-UP: Rondebult Road sinkhole remains a jigsaw puzzle for the metro

It remains unclear when repair work will commence.

The City of Ekurhuleni rejects claims that the city has reached a decision to take responsibility for the Rondebult Road sinkhole.

Responding to our long-standing request for an update on the matter, the metro responded on August 30 saying it is still waiting to receive feedback from the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE).

DMRE has not yet responded to our request for comment.

As previously reported in our latest article on the sinkhole saga, well-placed sources told this publication that senior officials in the relevant departments have made a resolution that the metro takes matters into its own hands following a back-and-forth between the two spheres of government in the province on who should rehabilitate the stretch of road.

The area’s ward councillor, Marius De Vos issued a statement, saying it’s been subsequently confirmed that indeed the municipality has taken a resolution to fix the road.

De Vos maintained that senior municipal officials confirmed the move during a recent oversight meeting.
