SAPS cannot verify assault, death
The police said no case was opened for the assault.
The assault of an elderly man at a pub in Benoni on September 15, allegedly leading to his death, cannot yet be verified.
CCTV footage from the Northmead pub went viral on the weekend, with the description stating that the man, believed to be 68, was assaulted by two men and later died in hospital from a brain haemorrhage.
According to Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the SAPS provincial spokesperson, the police were aware of the video’s circulation. However, they could not comment on the matter because their records indicated that no case had been opened.
Attempts to contact the video’s original poster have gone unanswered.
This is a developing story, and Benoni City Times will report further as more information becomes available.
