Three cars have been damaged and windows broken, in the past week as rock throwing on Snake Road seems to be on the increase.

According to Stephan Lombard, of Benoni CPF Sector 2, reported incidents have occurred between New Modder Road and Pioneer Drive, at around 20:00.

“Rock throwing is not a new trend and is aimed at forcing drivers to stop on the side of poorly lit areas to assess the damage,” he said.

“Criminals use this opportunity to pounce on the already rattled motorist, robbing them of their personal belongings. These assailants are in some cases armed and dangerous.”

During the most recent spate of incidents, members of the Benoni Police Station with the assistance on CPF patrollers were hot on the heels of five suspects, who evaded arrest.

“We urge motorists, where possible, to avoid this stretch of road after dark,” said Lombard.

Things to remember:
• Remain vigilant at all times and be on the look-out for any suspicious persons loitering next to the side of the road.

• In the event of your vehicle being struck with rocks, stay calm.
“Although incidents like these are traumatic it is of the upmost importance to remain in full control of your vehicle and to escape any potential danger,” he said.

• Do not stop despite the damage caused.
“It is natural to want to stop to assess the damage and this is what criminals are waiting for,” said Lombard.
“Opt to rather drive to a public area or nearby service station where you can safely contact the authorities and compose yourself. Your vehicle can always be repaired, in situations like this your safety is of upmost importance.”

Should you need assistance, send a WhatsApp to the Benoni CPF emergency number on 082 455 8853 or call 10111.
