Women send strong message against societal issues

They took the streets to raise awareness about gender-based violence and teenage pregnancy.

In commemoration of Women’s Month, over 50 women from the Anglican Women’s Fellowship in the Diocese of High-Veld held an awareness event on August 26 focusing on issues affecting women and children.

Wearing black dresses and colourful doeks, the group of women took the streets around their church in Woburn Avenue to raise awareness about gender-based violence and teenage pregnancy.

They held placards with messages such as ‘stop violence against women’, ‘stop pregnancy’ and ‘protect our women and children’ while singing religious songs.

Celebrating being women and powerful are some of the women who attended the Anglican Women’s Fellowship event on August 26.

According to president Zanele Buthelezi, the aim of the event was to shine a spotlight on the role of women and the church in curbing teenage pregnancy and other societal issues.

During the event, guest speaker Matshepo Majola reminded attendees that women play an important role in society.

“As women we should rise up and bring discipline back in our society, school and church. Mother’s should lead by example. Do not expect your child to be a shining star when you have not lead by example?

“It cannot be do as I say and not do as I do but it should be do as I say and do as I do. If our children are not learning from us who are they learning from? Be close to your children but remember that they are not your friends,” said Majola.

Meanwhile, in their efforts of making a difference in the society, they donated sanitary pads and care packs to representatives from six schools within the East Rand.
