AfriForum highlights conservation

“This was truly a community project. It was nice to see learners and young people from the community do their part to fix up the park.”

About 250 Benonians joined the AfriForum Benoni branch during their Environmental Affairs Day at Homestead Dam recently.

The event aimed to raise awareness about pollution, poaching and health.

The branch members and community picked up litter, cleaned sidewalks, pruned trees and cut the grass around the dam’s bank.

Over one ton of tar was used to fill potholes, while new notice boards were erected at the dam to raise awareness about protecting the local fauna and flora.

Local conservationist Jane Trembath, and Denzil Lazarus from the Blue Baboons Kayak Club, spoke to the community about the importance of water systems such as the Homestead Dam.

Community members cleaned a walkway at Homestead Dam.

They stressed the importance of preserving the fish species in the dam, while other speakers touched on physical and psychological health.

“This was truly a community project. It was nice to see learners and young people from the community do their part to fix up the park,” said Jurie Ferreira, the AfriForum district co-ordinator for Ekurhuleni.

“We say a special thank you to AfriForum Youth, the security services, emergency services, the local SAPS and the EMPD’s mounted unit who were involved in this day and helped to make it a success.

“A community that can come together and discuss their common challenges and issues and find solutions creates a culture of co-operation and mutual respect. We hope these projects will inspire the community to get involved and make a difference in their environment,” concluded Ferreira.
