Aunty Tanga’s long life celebrated

The oldest woman residing in Actonville was celebrated on National Women's Day.

In celebration of womanhood, members of Unity in Christ Church organised an event to celebrate the long life of their oldest resident.

Thelma Ramsammy, also known as Aunty Tanga, is 104 years old and her life is considered an inspiration to the community.

About 350 women from the community gathered to celebrate her life on National Women’s Day (August 9).

“It is amazing for her to have lived this long. Her life should be celebrated every single day and we wish all women here could live as long as her,” said the event organiser Shantel Sathabridg-McCabe.

A woman who has lived for 104 years and has been very helpful in her community, Aunty Tanga.

She expressed how this milestone gives hope to other people within the community.

Ward 29 Clr Imtiaz Loonat expressed his happiness when he delivered his speech during the event.

“We are humans because of women. They have the power to bring life into this world and that is the biggest reason why a woman will forever be important,” said Loonat.

He further elaborated on how happy it makes him feel to have a member in his community live to the age of 104.

Women enjoyed the high tea event.

“I have a granddaughter whom I love very much. I hope I can protect her, and I hope she lives this long because Tanga is very inspirational in our community.”

During the event, the women also listened to different speakers who shared stories they can relate to.

“Sometimes all you need to do is to stop and breathe. Having to take care of a household can be very stressful but it is the most beautiful thing when you see everyone in your home succeeding. Just take a break and believe that all is well,” said Monogari Moonsammy.

The ladies enjoyed live music, entertainment and motivational speeches on National Women’s Day at the Actonville Community Centre.

She taught the ladies a technique for relieving stress and gave prizes to the best participants.

Women encouraged each other to be strong while discussing topics including marital abuse, rape, cancer and other issues they experience in their community.
