City has no resources to fix manhole

“We will backfill, reinstate the pavement and cover the manhole once a new contractor is appointed.”

The CoE said it did not have the resources to backfill and reinstate the pavement and manhole damaged during excavations to fix a water leak on the corner of Cranbourne and Rothsay avenues in the CBD.

According to municipal spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the excavation was to stop a water leak on a 200mm diameter pipe.

When the Benoni City Times visited the area in June, we found the exposed manhole with water flowing from a burst pipe.

The leak was fixed but the hole is still exposed.

A hawker who runs a salon and barber shop adjacent to the manhole said for more than a month, it was left exposed with water gushing out.

When the paper returned to check on the issue, we found they had fixed the leak. However, the manhole still hadn’t been backfilled.

“We will backfill, reinstate the pavement and cover the manhole once a new contractor is appointed,” said Dlamini.
