Trial of suspected child killer begins

The accused faces charges of kidnapping, rape, murder, defeating the ends of justice and violating a corpse.

The high-profile trial of the man accused of murdering four-year-old Bokgabo Poo will begin tomorrow (August 1).

The trial was expected to begin this morning (July 31), but the case was postponed for the preparation of a new indictment and consultation.

Bokgabo was raped and her mutilated body was found in a veld in Wattville after she went missing on October 10 last year while playing with a friend in Masoleng Park.

The accused, Ntokozo Zikhali (30), looked confused throughout his brief appearance in the high court sitting at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court today.

He faces charges of kidnapping, rape, murder, defeating the ends of justice and violating a corpse and another rape charge involving the alleged rape of a nine-year-old Benoni girl earlier this year.

It is alleged that when Bokgabo was murdered, the accused was out on bail for this alleged rape.

During proceedings, his attorney, advocate Anneke van Wyk, told the court she still needed instructions from her client about two video clips she needed to show him.
