Good year for SPCA

The Benoni SPCA committee emphasised that public support is still needed to keep the society’s gates open.

Thanks to loyal supporters and sponsors of the Benoni SPCA charity shop, the society recorded an increase in profit to R1 023 855 compared to last year’s R803 183.

They revealed these figures at the society’s 2022/23 AGM on July 12 at the Benoni Lake Club.

According to the SPCA chairperson, Diane Wooldridge, the SPCA managed to keep its head above water this year due to the steady income received.

She said they could do what they were doing because of the support from the public, who donated food, blankets, funding and whatever else they needed.

Wooldridge revealed that the society had welcomed a new receptionist, Cynthia Masango, and Annah Nkosi, a new cleaner to their team.

She thanked the committee and staff for their continued support and expressed gratitude to Rotary, FNB and other donors who helped them during the year.

The chairperson indicated that they are looking to get the puppy isolation block fitted with a new drain. She urged local businesses to assist with kennel upgrades.

Sad news
The Benoni SPCA suffered another blow with the resignation of its manager, Darryn Potgieter, who joined them in September.

“It appears that annually we must report that our manager resigned and can only believe the right one is waiting for us to find them. We will try to fill this position as soon as possible,” said Wooldridge.

Financials
Presenting the treasurer’s report, Mark Stuart Downing said the cash generated from operations for the year increased from R141 633 to R374 705.

The society saw a decrease in adoption income to R151 350 compared to last year’s R180 178.

They received R759 950 from donations, R46 510 from kennel sponsorship, R71 331 from the medical room clinic and boarding fees decreased from R264 205 to R219 048.

Inspector’s report
Benoni SPCA inspector Thomas Mohlake said it received 366 cruelty complaints and rescued 684 animals after hours.

The inspectors conducted 233 routine inspections at grooming parlours, hawking sites, pet shops, independent kennels, security companies, stable yards, animal exhibits and zoos.
