Serial rapist case postponed

The former security guard has been facing 145 charges including rape and kidnapping.

The 38-year-old man charged with 44 counts of rape in Benoni, Daveyton and Thembisa since 2018 made his first appearance in the Benoni Regional Court on July 13.

The case against the former PRASA security guard was transferred from the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court on June 20 after his bail application was denied.

During his application, using an affidavit, the accused stated that he is a breadwinner, further claiming that his youngest child suffers from a neurological illness that requires specialised care and medication.

Magistrate Vinnie Gobind stated that given the gravity of the charges brought against the accused, as well as the evidence presented by the State, he posed a flight risk and, therefore, does not qualify for bail.

The accused further faces 43 charges of kidnapping, 41 of pointing a firearm and 17 additional charges, including fraud, obstruction of justice, forcing someone to witness a sexual act, contravention of the Police Act and Contravention of the Firearms Control Act.

The case was postponed to July 28.
