Police units bring 71 suspects to book

Intensive operations will continue in an effort to stamp out crime.

The Gauteng Rapid Response (RRS) unit, comprising the Flying Squad, K9 units and Highway Patrol members, arrested 70 suspects and recovered 52 vehicles and nine firearms from June 30 to July 6.

The intensive patrols across the province resulted in 25 arrests for serious crimes, including assault, possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, fraud, house burglary and theft, driving under the influence of alcohol and contravention of the Firearms Control Act.

“Officers successfully recovered hijacked and stolen vehicles resulting in 15 accompanying arrests,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, spokesperson for the unit.

“They also recovered nine unlicensed firearms, with six suspects arrested on charges related to having it.”

Members further arrested 24 suspects on charges of having and dealing with drugs.

The members also sized heroine, dagga, cocaine, Mandrax, and meth.

Benoni Flying Squad (BFS)
During routine operations on July 7 and 8, BFS members arrested one suspect in Wenden Avenue, Brakpan, on charges of possession of drugs.

“Officers further recovered an abandoned silver Hyundai Sonata in Edward Street, Lakefield,” said Giblin.

“They reported the vehicle as hijacked in Sebenza.”
