LETTER: Green means wait and look first

“Cross”, Rynfield, writes:

The traffic lights on the corner of Lessing Street and Pretoria Road and Parker Street and Pretoria Road are death traps because so many people ignore them when they turn red.

I advise anyone using these intersections to not just pull off when the traffic light turns green.

Wait and look in both directions first. There is bound to be a “hero” who couldn’t care less about your safety or anyone else’s who will blatantly speed through the intersection.

It is not a case of people deciding to cross on orange. These are drivers a good distance from the intersection who simply don’t stop when the light has turned red.

I will be reporting this to the EMPD. Something has to be done or lives will be lost here.

The EMPD are regularly on Pretoria Road, but further down, pulling drivers off randomly in peak hour traffic (which also causes chaos).

Please do everyone a favour and set up some ‘undercover’ surveillance of the two intersections to see how reckless drivers are, with no regard to the rules of the road.

South African drivers are notorious for flouting the rules. If you’re one of them, think about others, please. We would all like to get home safely to our families.
