Lions diabetes awareness walk well supported

The Benoni Lakes Lions Club has thanked Ebotse Golf and Country Estate, Oasis and Run Walk For Life for their support.

Taking steps against diabetes, 51 young and old people started their day on June 4 on a good note as they participated in a 5km fun walk around the parkrun route.

Partnering with Ebotse Golf and Country Estate, the Benoni Lakes Lions hosted the Strides for Diabetes Awareness walk to spread awareness about the importance of diabetes prevention and care.

Upon reaching the finishing line, participants received Strides walk pin and a bottle of water.

Attendees also had the opportunity to get screened for diabetes by paramedic, Cynthia Glazer.

Although the club hosted such an event for the first time, the turnout was magnificent.

According to Diane Townsend (Benoni Lakes Lions Club president), through the awareness walk they wanted to encourage the community to live a healthy lifestyle by exercising and watching their diets.

“All proceeds raised today will be used to support diabetics within the community that can’t afford to buy their medication,” Townsend said.

Seventy-six-year-old Tony Christian and Lisa van der Berg participated in a 5km fun walk around the parkrun route on June 4.

She added that they are looking into mobilising diabetics together to form a support group.

Townsend thanked Ebotse Golf and Country Estate, Oasis for donating water bottles and Run Walk For Life for their support.
