CPF TIP OF THE WEEK: Criminals just itching to get into your home

Residents urged not to fall for cunning tricksters’ rouses to gain access to their homes.

Sector 2 of the Benoni CPF has once again recorded an increase of would-be criminals attempting to gain access to the homes of unsuspecting residents.

“Using various tactics such as posing as employees from the Ekurhuleni Metro or private service providers, criminals will stop at nothing to coax homeowners into granting them access to their properties,” said Stephan Lombard, of the CPF.

“Residents are also urged to be weary of house hunters offering cash for the sale of properties, who are merely requesting to view the home.”

Lombard said that opportunities like these give criminals time to steal as they pretend to be inspecting the property.

“In worst case scenarios, you are putting yourself at risk of not having valuables stolen through the quick slide of hands, but more brazen criminals may move to hold you and your loved ones, hostage, while they ransack your home at their leisure.”

Residents are urged to not allow strangers access to their homes.

“Verify their credentials and when in doubt request your local CPF or security company to assist,” he said.

“Information sharing is the best way to establish possible criminal patterns, which would lead to intensified patrols by law enforcement agencies.”
