Privately used metro vehicles confiscated

Internal investigations have been launched against the drivers of the council owned vehicles.

Members of the EMPD’s Security and Loss Control Unit impounded three municipal-owned vehicles at a local high school, on May 23.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, EMPD spokesperson, the unit received information that the vehicles, a marked BMW belonging to the EMPD as well as a marked Ford Ranger belonging to DEMS, along with an unmarked white Ford Ranger belonging to the parks department, were being used by the assigned drivers to transport their children to school.

“This is a clear contractual misuse of council resources,” said Thepa.

“The vehicles were immediately impounded and internal investigations have been launched against the responsible drivers.

“We would like to reiterate that those assigned to use council-owned resources, that are meant to service the public at large, should refrain from using them privately. These resources are exclusively for service delivery.”
