Young athlete turns disappointments into successes

“Watching him grow has been exciting. He has learnt that it takes a lot of hard work to achieve your goals."

Young Benoni Indians player Matthew Pietroiusti has learnt that disappointments are part of the journey to success.

After failing to make it past the district athletics championships last year, the Farrarmere Primary School learner took the lessons from that event to prepare for the upcoming schools track and field season.

“Watching him grow has been exciting. He has learnt that it takes a lot of hard work to achieve your goals. We have always taught him that as long as he gives his all and has fun while doing it, he can’t lose,” said his mom, Emma.

During the South African Schools Sport Association (SASSA) national track and field championships in March, he won a silver medal in the U11 boys 1200m, clocking 03:49 for second place.

The youngster is not only a prolific middle-distance runner. He’s a pitcher and plays second base for the Benoni Indians Baseball Club and was part of Gauteng’s U12A team during the National Baseball Championships in Boksburg.

“He’s always involved in sport. It’s his passion. We try to manage his time in the best way possible and to not do more than one sport a day. This gives him balance and allows him to be a child,” Emma added.

Emma stated the 10-year old’s participation in multiple sporting codes has been beneficial.

“Running has helped him be determined to succeed. Baseball and soccer being team sports have taught him to work well within a team and to respect his teammates and coaches.”

The proud mom said her son’s achievements have left her speechless and that Matthew is an inspiration to his peers.
