‘Serial rapist’ to apply for bail

His youngest victim was 14 at the time of the rape.

The 38-year-old man alleged to be the Benoni and Thembisa serial rapist will apply for bail in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court on May 10.

The suspect, identified as a security guard employed by PRASA, was arrested on January 22 in Mayfield, Daveyton, following joint investigations by the SAPS Benoni and Thembisa Family Violence and Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS).

According to Lumka Mahanjana, NPA regional spokesperson, the suspect was active in Benoni, Daveyton and Thembisa from 2018 until his arrest.

He was initially charged with six counts of rape during his first appearance in January.

“They have since brought additional charges against him, including 44 counts of rape, 43 of kidnapping, 41 of pointing of a firearm, as well as 17 additional charges, including fraud, obstruction of justice and forcing someone to witness a sexual act.

“The accused allegedly raped 36 women, with the youngest being 14 at the time of the incident and the oldest 33.”

The victims were women on their way home or waiting next to the road for a taxi.

“He would stop next to them and force them into his vehicle under gunpoint,” Mahanjana explained.

“Then, he would drive to a desolate area where he would rape them.”
