Are you or a loved one battling with hard substance abuse? Encountering setbacks? Unable to fully commit to a recovery programme? Looking for more information on how to support a loved one battling substance abuse?

Substance abuse is characterised by drug- or alcohol-seeking and use that is compulsive or difficult to control, despite its harmful consequences.

Many people don’t understand why or how others become addicted to drugs or alcohol. They may think that those who use drugs or alcohol lack willpower and that they could stop simply by choosing to. In reality, this is complex because quitting takes more than good intentions or a strong will.

This week on Ask The Expert, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) will talk to Anel Sherren, the clinical supervisor at Cedars Addiction Treatment Centre, and Dr Hemant Nowbath, a psychiatrist, about hard substance abuse.
