Spikes gang back on Ekurhuleni roads

Note the routes identified as hotspots for this criminal activity.

The EMPD warned motorists to be extra cautious because criminals place spikes or objects on the roads to rob them.

According to EMPD media liaison officer Thabiso Makgato, the EMPD and other law enforcement agencies received several complaints about spikes strategically placed on the roads to rob unsuspecting motorists of their belongings.

“A pattern was established and shows these ruthless acts of crime usually happen on weekends and result in unnecessary accidents and the loss of life,” said Makgato.

The routes identified as the hotspots include the R562, Olifantsfontein; the R21 around OR Tambo International Airport; the N3 in Leondale; Barry Marais Road; and the N17 between Rondebult and Heidelberg roads.

The EMPD advises motorists not to stop when they hit a spike or get a tyre puncture, especially at night. Just continue to drive slowly to the nearest garage or police station.

“The department will continue to have high police visibility around the hotspots, and those found placing objects to endanger the lives of motorists will face the full might of the law.”
