Locals support Cansa Shavathon

Shavathon celebrated its 20th anniversary.

While some opted to add colour to their hair, others went for the shave as Benonians did their bit for cancer during the Shavathon fundraiser on February 25 and 26 at Northmead Square.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Shavathon is one of the crucial fundraising events on the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) calendar.

Benonians came out in their numbers to unite in solidarity with cancer survivors and those still fighting the disease.

Hans Moore matriculant Nico Boshoff, who was one of the first people to donate, said this was a proud moment for him.

“I’m making a difference to all those in the battle against cancer. Although small when compared to what the patients are going through, I’m proud to have played my part,” he said.

Tanya Engelbrecht said she’s had family and friends who fought cancer.

Tanya Engelbrecht from Northmead, who sprayed her hair in red, told the paper cancer has affected her personally as she’s had friends and family members who have been affected by the disease.

“Good luck to everyone fighting cancer. We are praying for you all. It’s touched me personally. I’ve had friends and family who have fought against cancer. I pray that you all get healthy,” said Engelbrecht.

Nicolene Weideman from Secunda added colour to her hair while her husband, Aubrey got a shave.

Klinton Kane and his four-year-old son Kason, who had his hair sprayed.

She said she was growing her hair after shaving it off when her mother-in-law was undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

According to the facilitators of the event, Mamba Security, 18 people shaved, 18 sprayed and six removed their ponytails on February 25. They also raised around R6 000 on the day.
