Local schools shine at district awards

“Today you are rewarded for your invaluable work.”

Nine schools from Benoni featured prominently at the 2022 Ekurhuleni North Grade 12 District Awards on February 10.

The atmosphere was electric as dignitaries from the Gauteng Department of Education’s Ekurhuleni North office, principals, educators and top achievers from the class of 2022, took their seats at Benoni High School (BHS) to hear the results.

Awards were handed out in 12 categories paying tribute to educators and learners who excelled in their various subject fields.

“Let us applaud the educators that provided tutelage to their learners in an extraordinary manner,” said Kagiso Magaswane of the district office.

“You all faced extreme challenges with resolute resilience.”

Nonceba Ntuta (Ekurhuleni North district director).

Nonceba Ntuta, district director, reiterated that the quality of education in the district is not only improving but that the steady upwards movement is a key indicator that future results will reach the office’s projected goals.

“The increased pass rate not only speaks of the improvement of the quality of education in the classrooms but also of the learners’ willingness to expand their knowledge,” said Ntuta.

“The learners, educators and schools being honoured are a reflection of the upward movement of educational quality.”

For the recipient of the award for the overall top learner, scoring 1699 marks out of possible 1800 for the best six subjects, Zayanah Laher of BHS said receiving the award was an honour which acknowledged years of hard work and unwavering support from her family.

“Being part of the BHS academic community has been a great privilege with God’s grace steering me to only do my best,” said Zayahnah.

“My wish for this year’s matrics is that they embrace every moment with courage, joy and excitement.”
