It was the Madison Landsman show at Willowmoore Park on January 16 as the Benoni Northerns all-rounder’s 4/16, including a hat-trick, helped South Africa to a 44-run victory over Scotland in their ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup clash.
Brought on to the attack in the 10th over with Scotland wobbling on 43/5, the leg spinner conceded only seven runs in her first two overs as Maryam Faisal and Nayma Sheikh struggled to deal with her slower balls.
Landsman grabbed her first wicket in the 15th over, dismissing Faisal who edged a ball to the keeper, Karabo Meso.
The 18-year-old then dismissed Niamh Muir for a duck after the Scot’s shot went straight to captain Oluhle Siyo at cover.
She grabbed her hat trick with another slower delivery around off-stump that sent the bails flying, sending Orla Montgomery back to the dugout.
The Eastern Storm player then had Maisie Maceira caught behind by Meso to grab her fourth wicket, helping South Africa to their first win of the tournament.
The Benoni High alumni’s path was paved by Jemma Botha and Ayanda Hlubi, whose superb bowling had Scotland in trouble early.

Botha opened the bowling and made an instant impact, leaking only two runs in the first over.
She got South Africa’s first wicket after trapping Ailsa Lister (10 off 11) in the third over while Hlubi also trapped Darcy Carter LBW in the following over.
Kayla Reyneke (1/11) and Seshnie Naidu (2/11) took charge of the middle overs, setting a solid foundation for Landsman to clean the Scotland lower order.
Scotland finished on 68 all out inside 17 overs.
Earlier, after winning the toss and electing to bowl, Scotland had South Africa in trouble as they grabbed four wickets for 21 runs inside the powerplay.
Openers Elandri Janse van Rensburg and Simone Lourens were dismissed in quick succession by Olivia Bell and Katherine Fraser, respectively.
Van Rensburg got off the mark with a boundary in the first over but was out five balls later while Lourens’ mistimed effort was caught by Faisal off the bowling of Fraser.
Captain Oluhle Siyo’s time at the crease was short-lived as she was bowled by Fraser in the fourth over to leave the hosts in trouble on 19/3.
Seamer Sheikh then grabbed the wicket of Landsman (0), sending the bails flying with a missile that left the South African fans stunned.
It was left to the player of the match, Kayla Reyneke, who watched in disbelief as wickets fell like dominoes around her, to wrestle back the momentum.
Reyneke and Jenna Evans steadied the innings, reaching their 50-run partnership in the 17th over before the former reached her half-century two overs later.
Reyneke top-scored with 53 off 48, helping South Africa reach 112/7.
