Rynfield Primary contributes to Mitchley’s fund

Learners raise R9 000 while Mitchley walked to Durban.

At the beginning of October, Gregg Mitchley, founder of the Gregg Mitchley Foundation (GMF), set off on an epic journey to walk 600km from Benoni to Durban in 14 days.

The walk was aimed at raising funds for the foundation, which focuses on the plight of children, the elderly and disabled persons. A portion was earmarked to assist Paralympian-hopeful Kirsty Weir of East London.

While Gregg was testing out his walking shoes, teachers and learners of Rynfield Primary School took the initiative to raise funds for his endeavour.

“We launched a fundraising campaign for GMF titled ‘Fill your heart with kindness’ where learners were encouraged to colour in a gridded heart, every time they received a donation in support of the initiative,” said principal Lynette Cuthbertson.

“It was an easy decision to support Gregg, as his core values strongly align with those that we uphold at our school. Heart, spirit, character and courage.”

On November 29, he was invited to the school’s final assembly where he was treated to a Christmas concert, after which he received an R9 000 donation.

“All I can say is wow!” said Gregg. “I am completely overwhelmed at the generosity of the learners, faculty and parents to have found it in their hearts to contribute to GMF.”

“Having the learners support this initiative, which aids children in need, was heartwarming.

“The funds will be used to make sure that less fortunate children get a gift at Christmas, while I will also be spreading some festive cheer to grannies and granddads at various old age homes,” Gregg said.

“Where possible, the money will also be used to stock food cupboards where needed.”
