BFS crime in brief

Weekend operations leads to the recovery of three firearms

Weekend operations conducted by members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) led to the arrest of nine suspects.

Possession of drugs
On October 7, two suspects were arrested in Kitchinger Street and Weden Avenue, Brakpan.

Cat and crystal methamphetamine were confiscated in the two separate incidents.

Possession of unlicensed firearms and explosives
Seven men aged between 19 and 67 were arrested on October 7 when information was received that they were travelling in a silver Toyota Quantum carrying firearms and explosives.

“At 15:00, following the receipt of the information from the Crime Intelligence Unit, in Germiston, officers were deployed to intercept the vehicle,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, BFS spokesperson.

“The vehicle was tactically confronted at the corners of Benoni Road and Mediterranean Sea Street, Cloverdene.”

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a 9mm Glock pistol, with the serial number filed off and 15 live rounds of ammunition. Two unidentified explosives were also found.

“The suspects were detained at Crystal Park SAPS and investigations in the case are continuing.”

Possession of unlicensed firearms
Around midnight on October 9, patrolling members spotted a suspicious-looking silver Toyota RunX, bearing foreign registration plates.

“Officers instructed the driver to stop on Putfontein Road. As the vehicle was coming to a standstill all four occupants jumped from the vehicle and ran in different directions,” said Giblin.

“Members conducted a search and found two firearms of which one was an air gun and the other a 9mm Cytac pistol with the serial number filed off.”

Police are currently hunting for the occupants.
