Ready to take the plunge? 20 public pools reopen tomorrow

Another 10 swimming pools may reopen soon.

Finally, some of the City of Ekurhuleni’s public swimming pools will reopen tomorrow (October 1) for swimmers eager to take their first plunge into summer, after a month-long delay from the typical reopening day (September 1).

Normally, the reopening of the city’s public pool coincides with Spring Day, September 1, but this year the leisure centres have had to remain closed after a struggle to secure enough chlorine gas to clean the water in the pools – and make it safe for swimmers.

Metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, explained there was a shortage of chlorine gas in the market and they only received stock on September 27.

“Even the stock received was not the complete order placed. Load-shedding is also hampering our ability to run our filtration plants 24 hours a day,” he said.

Dlamini, however, confirmed that 20 swimming pools are ready and will reopen on October 1.

There is hope for swimmers that an additional 10 pools will reopen soon.

“The opening of these additional 10 pools is dependent on the availability of budget and the parts required for carrying out repairs.

“The City of Ekurhuleni has a few old swimming pools undergoing refurbishment, so not all swimming pools will be opened this year,” he said.

The operational times stay the same and the costs will be R16 for category A swimming pools, R11 for category B swimming pools and R6 for category C swimming pools.
