What is rabies?
Rabies is a virus and a zoonotic disease (a disease that people can get from an animal). The virus is shed in the saliva of infected animals. People and other animals are usually infected when bitten by a rabid animal.

What are the symptoms of a rabid animal?
• Unprovoked or abnormal aggression/biting.
• Abnormal behaviour – restlessness, lack of coordination, paralysis.
• Abnormal barking/growling.
• Hypersalivation, foaming at the mouth.

How can I prevent my pet from getting rabies?
• All puppies and kittens should be vaccinated against rabies from three months of age and a booster before one year.
• Thereafter a booster rabies vaccination every three years.

To make appointment residents may contact the SPCA on 011 894 2814.
