Five arrested on the N12

Continuous operations lead to further arrests

Five men were arrested along the N12 and two firearms were recovered in two separate incidents, on September 19 and 22.

According to Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, spokesperson for the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS), the unit has ramped up patrols along the highway, with routine stop-and-searches yielding continuous successes.

On September 19, at 19:30, officers recovered copper cable to the estimated value of R30 000 being transported among a load of scrap metal.

“At the Daveyton off-ramp, officers noticed the white Toyota Quantum with a trailer and decided to conduct a routine search,” said Giblin.

“Upon investigation, officers noticed cabling that had been hidden under the other metals. Both occupants of the vehicle were arrested.”

On September 22, at 23:25, patrolling members came across a silver Volkswagen Polo driving recklessly at a high speed near the R555 off-ramp.

“Officers intercepted the vehicle and it was brought to a stop,” said Giblin.

“Following a thorough search, a 9mm magazine with live ammunition was found. The find prompted members to intensify their search after which two unlicensed 9mm pistols were found hidden inside the vehicle’s air filter housing.”

One of the firearms was found to have been stolen in Vosman, Emalahleni, in August.
All three occupants were arrested.
