Loadshedding a cause for water interruptions

Residents are urge to store water should the taps run dry due to loadshedding

With the ongoing energy crisis leading to more frequent and lengthy electrical interruptions, the Ekurhuleni Metro has further warned against water shortages as a direct result of load-shedding.

“The current situation has resulted in intermittent operation of water pump stations causing reduced and in some cases depleted water levels,” said CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“Residents in high lying areas are most likely to be affected as their water pressure is reliant on water towers that are filled through pumping water from reservoirs, using electricity.”

He continued by saying that some pump stations are equipped with emergency generators that cannot operate in cases of prolonged power outages.

“Water towers that have pump stations without emergency back-up generators experience quicker depletion thus resulting in a drop in pressure and ultimately water shortages,” he said.

“The city appeals to the public to use water sparingly, ensure that all taps are closed and store water for domestic purposes in the event of prolonged power outages.”
