FOLLOW-UP: Hijacked car recovered in Northmead attempted to evade police

“We would like to reiterate that the car was not stolen at the centre but recovered during a joint operation”

Following the arrest of a driver of a silver Mercedes Benz at Northmead Square yesterday (September 13), the management of the centre would like to make it clear that the car was not stolen at the centre.

Management said it arrived there while the driver was trying to evade police during a high-speed chase.

According to the centre manager Paul Powell, members of the Benoni Flying Squad in conjunction with several vehicle tracking and armed response companies coordinated a sting operation regarding the vehicle in question.

“A high-speed chase ensued, which led the driver to head to the centre in an attempt to evade arrest,” he said.

“By cross-referencing the vehicle’s VIN and engine numbers, it was concluded that the vehicle was hijacked several months ago.

“Management of Northmead Square congratulates members of the SAPS and NoJack Tracking for working together in ensuring that criminals are apprehended and brought to book.

“Our guards were on site and were of assistance to local authorities during the apprehension of the driver,” Powell said.
